Tree-mendous?

We got our Christmas Tree (no, not holiday tree) last week, and had a small Christmas tree decorating party this past Saturday night – the tree looks “tree-mendous!” However, it got me to thinking about positives and negatives of real and artificial trees.

I’ve never had an artificial tree – I kind of like the fun of going out and “finding” the perfect tree. But these prices are starting to get ridiculous – we paid around $40 for our tree this year – by far the most we’ve ever spent on a tree. Sometimes, it seems more “economical” to pay a one-time fee for an artificial tree.

However, I love real trees – love the smell of them in the house, and frankly, I think they look far better than any artificial tree I’ve ever seen. Plus, taking an artificial tree out of a box in the attic and putting it together doesn’t really signify Christmas for me.

But, stripping the tree naked after the holidays and throwing it to the front curb doesn’t feel like Christmas either, does it? It feels like an unwanted family member, or something. I’m sure the real trees would probably agree with me on this.

Where do these trees go once they no longer are of use to us? Is there a Christmas tree burial ground somewhere near the airport that I’ve never heard of? Does somebody have a huge Christmas tree bonfire after the holidays? Is there somebody out there with the biggest Christmas tree collection ever? I gotta know!

I'm allergic to the real thing -- OK to visit for 1-2 days, can't have in my house for a week.

So we have a fiber-optic tree.

I'm guessing your tree becomes my mulch next year.

oooh lala jeff, i love the fiber optic trees. I have one in my basement with Blanta. But for the main room, it's a live tree all the way.

By the way, I didn't know we couldn't put unwanted family members on the curb. Do they recycle them? Return (or replace them with) somebody else's unwanted family member?? Hmm ... a whole new twist on trash day...... Babs Peapod

I walk in and out of the lots waiting for a tree to "talk" to me. Sounds like a psychotic thing...but every year one "talks" louder than the rest.

I burn mine in the fire...gives heat and doesn't take up the garbage...

So get a tree planted in your yard, Los, and then decorate it every year! No more annual xmas tree buying or disposing of, plus the tree stays alive and grows with you through the years.

I throw mine in the field across the street and put bird food in there for the peeps.

A bonfire does sound like a lot more fun however.

Jeff - allergies are one thing ...

Lisa - I say don't knock it, 'til you try it!

Superstar - Actually, Lisa (Barbara Peapod) sings a song to a tree she buys ... weird.

ElP - I've never heard of Christmas trees being compared to boobs ... I like it!

Ink - But then I'd need to buy more ornaments ...

Wreckless - I like the way you think!

i'm also allergic to pine trees, so i love the smell of plastic. we just did up our tree a couple of nights ago and we only broke one ornament as we put it up. not too bad.

I've always had artificial trees growing up. I just can't picture killing a tree for a few weeks of enjoyment every year... and paying a lot of money to do it. Yes, they do look better, but my pre-lit artificial does the job.
